Columbia's Admit Week Debrief

"This past weekend was Columbia’s Open House for admitted students. It was 2 days (fri and sat) of jam-packed introductions, panels, classes, receptions and networking. It was all incredibly fun and simultaneously exhausting. A few people actually recognized me from this blog which is embarrassing enough but one of them was an admissions officer! (seems like I need to get better at this anonymity thing) Read on for the juicy details..."

Musings on Kellogg's Differentiators

"The business schools try very hard to differentiate themselves. Yet, just reading Tieny’s Columbia admit weekend debrief reminds me of how similar the top schools are... right down to bragging about the achievements of the admits at the admit weekend. The business schools are more similar than different. As soon as one innovates something, the others quickly copy..."

What I Wish I'd Known About MBA Admissions

"My experience of applying for business school was one hell of a long haul. I think I first started thinking about doing an MBA in the Fall of 2006. It took me a long time to get myself moving; it took me until early 2008 to get my GMAT done. Then it was a whirlwind season of essays, interviews and everything else. Orlando has posted some excellent advice on shaping up an MBA application. Apart from what he has written, if I were to go through it again, there are some specific things that would have been useful for me to have known upfront..."

High off Networking

"I am high off networking lately. I always thought I hated networking because I’m pretty genuine and hate fake people above all others, but it turns out networking can mean meeting a lot of interesting people.Meeting so many new people has been one of the best parts of researching b-school. As they say, it’s like dating. Only more fun. You think I’m joking..."

First Job Application

"I’m working on my first job application. Booz & Co. offers a summer internship for selected female students (from many top US schools) in a European office. Plus your 2nd year of tuition is covered. Sweet. I figured I might as well apply since it’s not too much effort to put together a cover letter and ask my recommenders to send a reference letter my way. Any Booz-ites want to give me tips?..."

HBS Admit Welcome Event

"I’m exhausted. The HBS admit welcome event was a great experience and I would encourage all applicants to go to the admit weekends for the schools to which they have been accepted, even if they are not planning to go there. You will have great points to compare and contrast across the schools and your decision will be better informed. For example, after attending a case-based HBS class, I am now much more sensitive to the use of the case format and want to understand more about Stanford’s pedagogy. To be very honest, I hadn’t given it much thought before..."

Fridays from the Frontline

"Welcome back to another round of b-school revelations courtesy of Clear Admit’s Fridays From The Frontline! Over the past week students and applicants alike have had their fair share of learning experiences, decision-making moments and fun. As the weather grows ever warmer (for those of us on the north side of the equator, of course) we see people shedding some of the layers of fear and trepidation in favor of hope and/or jubilation..."

Watching the Crisis from B-School

"If the business world is changing, there is no better time to be where I am in this educational endeavor...

They say that even the gods fear the fates. As the agents of destiny would have it, the collapse of the financial markets coincided with my first semester of business school. When the planets aligned in what Alan Greenspan described as a "once in a century" crisis, the topsy-turvy world I was trying so hard to navigate tried to right itself through seismic shifts, aftershocks, and revelations. The economic principles about the free market that made so much sense mapped out with graph paper, colored pencils, and mathematical equations this past summer evaporated into a cloud of uncertainty. Perhaps, as Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz stated in his 2006 book, Making Globalization Work, "the reason that the invisible hand often seems invisible is that it is often not there."..."
